One of the areas where the elderly will always need assistance is in housing. There are a number of ways that they can get discounts for senior citizens. One is through free for seniors programs, rent subsidies or other forms of concessions offered by both the government through the housing department.
HUD Programs
The department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has several programs that provide different types of concessions for rental and housing expenses that the elderly and the disabled struggle with.
• Congregate Housing Services Program: This targets mainly low income seniors and those with disabilities. It is designed to help eliminate the need to institutionalize seniors who are incapacitated in one way or the other.
• Multifamily Rental Housing: This is meant for middle income families. It is eligible for those who already have the home insured under this program. The HUD determines the amount they will subsidize and this is not necessarily pegged on income.
• Homeownership Vouchers: This is a program that the HUD came up with to assist first time home owners to own a home. The main condition is that the applicant should not have owned a house in the past.
• Supportive Housing for Persons with Disabilities: This is meant to help people with disabilities live without depending on anyone. Those with disabilities with a median income of about $9000 are eligible.
Waiting List
One of the things you need to note about these free for seniors programs is that you are likely to be put on the waiting list. It may take two to three years to access some of the discounts for senior citizens.
